One of motor-racing's most unusual circuits hosted its inaugural race 100 years ago on 24th September 1921. AVUS, located on the outskirts of Berlin, became famed for the steep 43-degree banking introduced in 1936, and its high average lap speed, owing to it effectively being two drag strips.

Just to contextualise the steepness of the banking, the recent F1 host circuit of Zandvoort, with its brand new banking at turns 3 and 14, are a mere 19-degrees.
