Paul Smith + Mercian - Tandem Bicycle
In May this year Paul took part in Wallpaper Handmade - a unique exploration of craft and design that, according to Wallpaper editor-in-chief, Sarah Douglas, pairs "the finest creative talents and rising stars with the most outstanding makers and manufactures".
For this landmark tenth edition Wallpaper* proposed the theme of love. In response, Paul turned to Derbyshire cycling specialists, Mercian, and asked them to build a bicycle made for two. "It reflects the love of cycling, but also the idea of going out for a cycle with your loved one", said Paul, who commissioned the bike with his wife Pauline in mind.
Mercian still build their bike frames by hand using lightweight steel tubing, traditional tools and time-honoured techniques. Paul's tandem uses Reynolds 853 Pro Team oversize tubing for the frame, which was then painted matt black to match Paul's existing fixed-gear Mercian. Accent panels inside the chain stays, seat stays and forks were then added to provide flashes of subtle colour.
Contrasting the craftsmanship of the frame are high-tech modern components, which make this tandem a delightful marriage of old and new. The bike features a cutting edge electronic groupset and carbon fibre forks, bars, stems and seat pins for lightness.
A lifelong fan of Mercian bicycles, Paul was delighted with the result. "They were fantastic", he said. "Despite the tight deadline, they came out with what must be one of the most beautiful tandems in the entire world".
